The English department was founded as one of the department in  PTPG (Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru/Higher Education for Teachers) in 1956. ED then became Faculty of Language and Letters Education in 1959.  It transformed  into an institution for Teachers' Education in 1964. Since 1977, English Department is under the Faculty of Teachers' Training and Education in Satya Wacana Christian University as one of its popular and leading department.

Several innovations that have been applied in the English Department to keep up with the trends and needs of the society were:

1. The establishment of Pre-University Course (PUC) program led by Mr Kenneth Michael Jenson in the 1970s to assist the candidates of English Department students which graduated from out of Java high schools. Most of PUC graduates became professional teachers in various schools and universities in Indonesia.

2. The establishment of  Self-Instructional English Course (SIEC) program in mid 1970s to prepare SWCU's lecturers who were going to study abroad.  This program was taken care by a team, which consisted of Ms. Angela Hope, Ms. Annie King, Ms. Judith Nichols, and Ms. Jenny Toisuta.

3. Involvements in  "Special Intensive Indonesian Course" (SIIC) program, widely known at the present as PIBBI (Program Intensif Bahasa dan Budaya Indonesia-Intensive Program of Indonesian Language and Culture ) since 1973.

4. The establishment of  a course program and minor program for Indonesian Language/ English in mid 1970s as well as  2-year and 3-year diploma program for English language in mid 1980s.

5. The establishment of Language Center unit to handle ESP (English for Specific Purposes) program, PIBBI dan College of English for Business (CEB). CEB which was established in 1980s originally was intended to cater the candidates of English Department students who did not wish to be teachers. In the latter stage, CEB became an independent unit and transformed itself into a professional program.

6. The establishment of Language Bureau by Drs. Bintoro which handled Indonesian and English language teaching activities for non English Department students in early 1970s.

7. Involvements  in the establishment of Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing (StiBA-School of Foreign Languages) Satya Wacana  initiated by Rector Dr J.O.I. Ihalauw in 1998.

Though undergoing several structural and curricular changes, one principle remains the same: English Department has always been a department which follows the changes in language teaching trend.
